Tash Reviewing Books

19 yrs old. Australian. Student of the Engineering variety. I like books with words in them, if its Fantasy or YA even better. I write reviews whilst procrastinating. The quality of these reviews are debatable.

Progress - Red Seas Under Red Skies

Red Seas Under Red Skies - Scott Lynch

p55 / 586

Just another reminder of why I love these guys so much...

“That's a sweet piece," said Jean, briefly forgetting to be aggravated. "You didn't snatch that off a street."

"No," said Locke, before taking another deep draught of the warm water in the decanter. "I got it from the neck of the governor's mistress."

"You can't be serious."

"In the governor's manor."

"Of all the -"

"In the governor's bed."

"Damned lunatic!"

"With the governor sleeping next to her."

The night quiet was broken by the high, distant trill of a whistle, the traditional swarming noise of city watches everywhere. Several other whistles joined in a few moments later.

"It is possible," said Locke with a sheepish grin, "that I have been slightly too bold."

Review - The Dream Thieves

The Dream Thieves - Maggie Stiefvater
A book about dreams that come to life, a quest to find a hidden king, a magical forest and a house full of psychics and even a little forbidden romance.

Ok well maybe it is, but it also so much more then that.

Maggie Stiefvater is a truly talented writer. Each one of her books reads like poetry, they're all so hauntingly beautiful it hurts my soul. If I was still at school studying this sort of thing I might go on about the prose and imagery that makes these stories stay with me long after finishing. But I'm not.

The start of this book is slow. I was surprised by how much of an effort it became for me to power through the first half the book, especially after the amazing ending of The Raven Boys.

I didn't mind having things centred around Ronan this time round. I cannot applaud Stiefvater enough for creating such an intriguing and fleshed out character. Thats not to say we don't get enough of Gansey, Adam, Noah and Blue. There are definitely no cardboard cutouts in this series with both new and old faces revealing secret motives and other hidden mysteries via drip feed throughout the book. It's definitely enough to keep you turning pages.

But despite the magic that is the characters I just couldn't seem to immerse myself in the magic of Cabeswater this time round. I found Adam's storyline to be incredibly confusing at times and I'm not going to lie, I sort of just wanted Stiefvater to spell things out for me because by the ending I honestly had no idea what was happening in that boys head. Things are messed. up.

Maybe it's because I decided to read World After (a fucking amazing book) midway through that when comparing my enjoyment levels The Dream Thieves just seems like more of a chore. I appreciate a book that makes you think and requires the readers to take a bit of initiative and puzzle things out. This is next level though when compared to Raven Boys, everything is beginning to interweave and I have no doubt that the next book will be full of big reveals but in the meantime I'm just left frustrated. Despite all the events of the Dream Thieves I feel that by the end of it we've simply come full circle and are back to exactly where we started in terms of the main storyline - finding Glendower.

What I'm trying to say here is that I enjoyed this book, it just wasn't the 5 star read that the first book was for me.

I have extremely high expectations for the next book.

What's this I found..... expected publication July 2014!!!

"I´m pretty sure i saw Zuckerberg digging the latrine ditch beside Raffe at the camp a few days ago. I guess a billion dollars doesn't buy much respect in the World After."
World After - Susan Ee

Must. Stop. Laughing.

Review - The Fiery Heart

The Fiery Heart - Richelle Mead
I have two major complaints about this book. Zoe and Neil. Two characters introduced for the soul purpose of being annoying and boring. Although Neil did provide some new material for Adrian, Zoe just spent her entire time ANNOYING THE SHIT OUT OF ME!!

In fact, I think Adrian sums it up pretty well within only the first chapter...

"The newest addition to the group was Neil Raymond aka Tall, Proper, and Boring."

"Zoe had been sent recently as an apprentice and had become a huge pain in the ass for hiding our relationship."

Yep.

Thats it.

Their entire roles in this story summed up in two lines.

ANYWAY...

We get Adrian's POV.

You definitely feel the love in this book. I was all warm and fuzzy inside every time Sydney and Adrian were together. Especially when Adrian was dropping lines like this...

"Relax, having kids is years away. But can you imagine? Your brains, my charm, our collective good looks... then add in the usual physical abilities dhampirs get.

It's really not even fair to everyone else."

Let's face it... I pretty much spent the entire book in this sort of state,

On a serious note, if there's one reason for you to pick up this book after Indigo Spell it's this,

MALACHI IS BACK!!

That, and Mead does manage to skilfully handle a number of issues from relationships and sex to addiction and body image.

So why only 3 stars?

I love this series. I really do, and as a whole I'd recommend these books to everyone. I just didnt find this book to be as gut wrenching and page turning must-know-how-it-ends-right-now-ish as the others. I love that Sydney and Adrian are now together, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss all that tension that the previous 3 books provided.

In conclusion, the ending was HORRIBLE if not a little predictable and as far as cliffhangers go it's all pretty dam frustrating.

I will definitely be picking up book 5 (does it even have a title yet?).

A Message to Sydney's Dad,

Fuck. You.

Review - The Lies of Locke Lamora

The Lies of Locke Lamora - Scott Lynch

The Lies of Locke Lamora is full of thieving, swearing and double crossing. Throw in a bit of gangsta thug life and you know before you even start that your going to love this book. Locke and his gang, the Gentlemen Bastards are in the middle of one of their biggest heists yet when things start turning awry. I could of read a book entirely composed of the witty banter between these guys as they ran about robbing nobles and deceiving the mafia like boss of the underworld, the Capa. However, as a new power emerges to threaten the Capa, things quickly take a turn for the worse and this is definitely where the story quickens it's pace. The barrels of horse piss roll out and the death count rises as Locke and his gang find themselves embroiled in an underground war where deception, torture and murder is only the tip of the iceburg.

Some minor SPOILERS ahead...

I personally, love a good story about revenge and as this theme came to the forefront I found myself awake at 3am in the morning still flipping pages. I loved seeing Locke's change from smartass thief to badass motherfucker. The final moments are edge of your seat stuff, I was hit in the face with emotion and I don't think I have ever wanted a character to succeed as much as I wanted Locke too.

The twists in this book are expertly crafted and the world Lynch has created is as rich and diverse as you could hope for in a fantasy novel without being overwhelming. There are a large number of flashbacks interwoven throughout the story to give some further depth to the relationships formed between the Gentlemen Bastards and there previous mentor Chains (view spoiler). As well as the action, the one liners are non-stop with moments you cant help but laugh out loud at. There are definitely some graphic scenes that I wouldn't be reading out loud to any young children anytime soon (or anyone who is particularly squeemish for that matter) and the "fucks" and "shits" are thrown around rather casually, although if anything I found this refreshingly brilliant and somewhat badass at times.

I could go on for forever but I'll just sum things up by saying this.
The Lies of Locke Lamora has one of the most satisfying endings I have ever read. Although this is a series, this could definitely be read as a standalone. I however, cannot wait to get my hands on Red Seas Under Red Skies as soon as exams are over.
